Moving towards Personalisation

Updated: Oct 5, 2022

How to access which level of personalisation?

Personalisation helps to quicken and simplifies user process and enhance UX experience. However, to do it well, companies need to understand and be aware of which state of maturity their business are they towards personalisation for their users.

When I realised that there are different stages of personalisation that various businesses in similar industries are at, I decided to come up with some matrix to help product owners to move from a Level 0 to a Level 2 Maturity of personalisation by considering these five sectors -

Differentiation: How much difference can the service be tailored and offered to different range of individuals?

Flexibility: How flexible can your system or product be altered to suit various needs of the users?

Predictability: How much can the system inform what the user wants to do next or provide recommendations?

Accuracy: How accurate is the system capturing user’s information and providing the right kind of services?

Delivery/Execution: How is the product/service being used or delivered to the users? How does the user use the service?

Personalisation Maturity Model: How can companies access their level of personalisation? What is needed?

What needs to be considered when planning to implement a personalised feature?

Once the company knows which maturity they are currently at and wants to move towards to, the next step is to access the effort required to implement certain personalisation feature.

Personalised feature is only workable if done well. Below is a framework that I have came up with of 6 key areas that businesses need to put into consideration before a new personalised feature can be rolled out.

Note: Personalisation is not a must-have but a good-to-have.

6 Pillars Framework: How can companies make use of this framework to decide whether they are capable of building a particular personalisation feature?
